If you get the Internet package on the ship, unfortunately it won’t extend to the island. There’s no service while you’re on the beach so if you want to get in touch at home or post to social media about your day at the beach, you’ll need to wait until you go back aboard. On Norwegian cruise ships, guests looking for luxury have The Haven — an exclusive part of the ship that separate from the rest of their guests. They can still enjoy the rest of the ship but also have their own little spot. Great Stirrup Cay has several coves that run across the length of the island. The first and largest cove is by far the most popular with people as it’s right by the landing for the tender boats.
For a fee you can strap in and set off flying through the air, getting spectacular views of the island and the surrounding water. It’s not every day that you get to fly through a place with such natural beauty. As you approach the island, the lighthouse will be the first thing you notice, and it’s the tallest structure on the island. It’s not a real lighthouse, instead, it’s a staging point for the zipline that criss-cross Great Stirrup Cay. Starting at lunch, Norwegian puts on a spread with all sorts of tasty things to eat.
Be warned that the water in this particular area can be rocky so consider bringing water shoes as this is the side of the island used for snorkeling. The last picture above is of one of the island’s private cabanas that you can rent out for the day on the other side of the island. With over 2000 passengers onboard the Norwegian Sky and the sun and sand beckoning to all of them, I was intent on getting over to the island on the first tender. Pre-order a cheese board, sushi or tacos and find them waiting for you in the cabana. It’s a great way to start your Great Stirrup Cay visit in style with a party mood.
If you’re looking for some beachy thrills, sign up for a zip-line adventure. The island has two courses featuring six zips and a ropes course of cargo nets, chimney climbs, and V-net bridges. You can even take a turn parasailing high above the island’s shores. That said, depending on when you go you may not want to swim much. It was still nice and warm to lay on the beach, but we didn’t do much swimming.
Since the island is uninhabited, your only options for shore excursions are those you book through the cruise line. Stand-up paddle boarding (or SUP) is a fun way to get out on the water, and it’s a great workout, too! SUP is easy to learn, and the staff will give you pointers before sending you out to paddle around Bertram’s Cove.
In addition to the luxurious amenities offered at the Silver Cove Resort, guests can also rent beach villas for the day. Each villa comes with comfortable seating, a cooler stocked with water and soda, and a ceiling fan to keep you cool. Keep in mind the only other people in this area will be those who’ve booked villas, so it’s a bit quieter than the rest of the island.
Since Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t run the bazaar, you won’t be able to use your cruise card here. It’s cash-only (US or Bahamian dollars) so be sure to bring cash for the market if you think you might want to do some shopping. If you have a shore excursion that departs from the dock on the south side of the island, shuttles will take you to and from that location. There aren’t any lockers available on the island for passengers to secure their valuables.
